Butternut pumpkin

It’s pumpkin pickin’ time!

Pumpkins are ready to pick once the vines have mostly browned off and died down.

When harvesting pumpkins:

  • You need to keep at least 5-10 cm of green stalk attached to each pumpkin, so DO NOT pull them from the vine. Use a knife or pruners to snip them free.
  • Don’t be tempted to carry the pumpkins by their stalk “handle” it will probably break off!
  • Try not to cut or damage the skin

To cure pumpkins ready for storage:

  • Put them in a sunny, dry, airy position to dry for 1-2 weeks.  I normally put them on our outdoor table that is under the verandah.
  • They are ready to store once the stem is dry and brittle.

Storing pumpkins:

  • Store them in a cool, dry and well ventilated area.
  • Lay them out on a single layer, so they aren’t touching to allow good air circulation.
  • Properly cured pumpkins will keep for 2-3 months

Pumpkin Glut?

You can’t go past pumpkin soup!

Try adding a touch of curry powder to your normal recipe – that subtle spicey hint of warmth from the curry powder makes it EXTRA warming.

YUMMMMMMM………….
